Amdanga, 12 March
CPI-M supporters and their family members residing at Amdanga allege that they are being tormented by police and Trinamul Congress members for the past few months.
Amdanga is an important area of Barrackpore Lok Sabha constitution.
Most of the families of this area are active members of CPI-M. According to them, police are punishing them for supporting CPI-M.
In this village, the Bahisgachi and Taraberia area are known as the "CPI-M area". The villagers said every night and every morning Amdanga police personnel come to torment the villagers. They also take over their farmlands and destroy their crops and houses.
Md. Ismail, a villager of Taraberia, alleged that after the CPI-M Brigade rally the police atrocities have increased. He said immediately after the rally in Kolkata, some Trinamul Congress supporters, accompanied by local police, came to the village to find out who had attended the rally.
They allegedly threatened them.
As a result a large number of men left the village, leaving behind their families. Police, villagers allege, conduct frequent raids in the village accompanied by some female officers.
Mrs Sukhna Khatun, a local, said they find it difficult to live with the continuous harassment and threats of rape by local police. There is no security for children, too, she said. She further alleged that the women are beaten up by male police officers. Police often raid their homes and allegedly loot things even late at night. They allegedly threaten to murder them if they don’t give up their allegiance to the CPI-M.
Many higher secondary examinees from the village could not prepare for the examinations due to police harassment. Trinamul MLA for Amdanga, Mr Rafikar Rahman, denied the allegations saying police are working to stop crime in the village. A few days ago they arrested some anti-socials and seized some explosives from them, said Mr Rahman. Since then they are conducting raids in the village to find out other criminals, he said.
Mr Bhaskar Mukhapadhyay, ASP of North 24-Parganas, echoed the same.
On the other hand, Mrs Subhashini Ali, the CPI-M candidate for the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls from Barrackpore, visited the village. She met many villagers who have been allegedly tortured. Many women and children who met her asked for her help. She assured them of her help and said strict action will be taken against the perpetrators.
