Cong leader supports Bhuniya as PAC chief

Senior Congress leader Debaparasad Roy has supported the decision of West Bengal Assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee in choosing Congress veteran Manas Bhuniya as the chairman of Public Accounts Committee (PAC) in the state Assembly.

The issue has triggered discord in the Congress party. “The Speaker has the discretionary power to appoint the PAC chairman. Manas Bhuniya is the most experienced legislator. He has been elected as MLA for the seventh time while Sujan Chakrabarty of CPI-M is a first time MLA,”said  Roy at a press conference in Siliguri on Sunday.

He added, “If we talk about the experiences then Asit Mitra of Congress comes next to Bhuniya as he has been elected four times. During the tenure of the previous state government, CPI-M MLA  Anisur Rahman was appointed as the PAC chairman and later  Gyan Singh Sohanpal became the PAC chairman.“If Bhuniya is allowed to continue as the chairman now,  Chakrabarty can later be chosen as the chairman,” he added.

Bhuniya faced the wrath of a section of party leaders for accepting the post. A meeting will be held in New Delhi to resolve the logjam on 9 August. The AICC vice president Rahul Gandhi has convened the meeting.
