Delving into the past

The Indian Museum is hosting a three-day workshop on “Palaeontology in Archaeological studies”, starting on Thursday.

The workshop is scheduled to continue till 11 November.

The workshop on palaeontology and its applications in archaeology will familiarise its participants with the rich ecological and environmental treasure trove that is, despite its long continuity reaching back millions of years, gradually being eroded in part due to a lack of awareness and understandingboth on the part of government bodies and on the part of the common people.

Eminent historians and archaeologists have been invited from different parts of India to speak about their knowledge and share their experience on the matter. Professor Vijay Sathe, Deccan College, Pune will speak on the palaeontology of large vertebrates in their order in peninsular India.

Apart from this, he will also share his ideas on the dental and bone histology and their application and potential in Palaeontological research studies.

There will also be a session on the vertebrae palaeontology of the Narmada valley, with special reference to the collection of Indian Museum and the Natural History Museum, London.

“Students from various schools and colleges have been invited to come, as this topic might interest them. The museum has always been a treasure-trove and we want students to participate and gain knowledge from it,” said the education officer of the Indian Museum, Sayan Bhattacharya.

The workshop will also be devoted to an introduction to laboratory methods in palaeontology, such as conservation and preservation of fossils, and preparing replicas through casting and moulding.

Prateek Chakraborty, from the Deccan College will organise a hands-onexperience for students on the third day of the workshop.

“One of the principal and foremost reason of organising this workshop is to create awareness among the people, mainly the students of our city, some of whom could one day become world famous palaentologists,” added Mr Bhattacharya.
