Siliguri, 12 March
The North Bengal University (NBU) today postponed under-graduate examinations in all colleges under it because of the Lok Sabha elections. The exams will now begin on 21 May.
The examinations for Part I, Part II and Part III honours and pass papers of Part III were earlier scheduled to be held between 1 and 17 April, while the Part I and Part II general examinations were scheduled to be held between 22 April and 25 May. "The examinations will begin from 21 May. They were postponed as colleges are being used by the administration for election activities. The administration has requisitioned most of the colleges under the NBU in view of the elections," the NBU controller of examinations, Susanta Das, said.
According to the revised schedule, the examinations of the theoretical papers including Hounours and general will begin on 21 May and end on 11
July.
The practical examinations will be complete on 9 August.
"Most of the big colleges, including two in Darjeeling district, two in Jalapiguri  (one in Malbazar and another in Dhupguri), four in Cooch Behar and three in North Dinajpur (Raiganj, Islampur and Chopra), have been requisitioned for the polls,” Mr Das said.
According to him, the administration has informed the NBU that some more colleges might be requisitioned for the police.
Around 1, 90,000 students will appear for the under-graduate examinations this year and, according to the previous exam schedule, the results were supposed to be published on 15 June, Mr Das said.
“But we are not in a position now to say when the results will be published under the revised schedule," he added.
There are 57 colleges affiliated to the NBU in Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri,
Cooch Behar and some parts of North Dinajpur district. Mr Das said the NBU has started sending the revised schedules to the colleges.
"The students may contact their respective colleges for the new exam schedule," he said.
