AAP govt blames Delhi Police for biker’s death

The death of a biker who was run over by a truck after his two-wheeler was “trapped” in a pothole in Vasantkunj has now sparked a debate between the State’s Public Works Department and the Delhi Police.

While PWD claimed that Delhi Police had stopped their teams from carrying out repairs on the road and many others, police said that no permission was required in such cases and the civic agency was trying to pass the buck.

PWD also said that the police had impounded vehicles and shared copies of the letter written to the police to back its claims.

Sources claimed that PWD had written several letters to Delhi Traffic Police requesting not to stop the repairing work of Vasant Kunj Road. In these letters they had warned of an accident but instead of allowing maintenance, traffic police seized their vehicles.

Reacting to the allegations, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic-Southern Range) Harendra K Singh said that no clearance from police was required as far as repairs are concerned. “Delhi Police regrets the unfortunate incident of road accident that happened on Mehrauli Mahipalpur road. However, it is to clarify that NOC from Traffic Police is sought only when a major repair work requiring closure of the road or diversion of traffic is required. For day to day repair work including repairing/filling of potholes etc, no permission is required. Rather Traffic Police regularly brings into the knowledge of concerned agencies, about waterlogging points due to rains, damaged roads, potholes etc. We always facilitate the repair work so that any congestion or accident is avoided,” said a statement issued by Singh.

A 45-year-old man was crushed to death in Vasant Kunj Saturday evening after his motorcycle got stuck in a pothole. The man, identified as Praveen, fell off the motorcycle and was run over by a water tanker.
