Attack on girl leaves JNU students in shock

The students and administrative officials of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) expressed shock and grief over the  attack on a female student by her classmate in broad daylight.
JNU officials said it was an unprecedented incident in the university’s history. "The entire university community is deeply shocked at this unfortunate and unprecedented incident. The university is known for its harmonious and peaceful relations among the various sections of its community," said JNU PRO Poonam Kudaisya.
JNUSU vice president Meenaxi said that both the injured students were immediately rushed to hospital but the boy could not survive.
She said the university has good security arrangements and CCTV cameras are installed at various places. A security lapse could not be the reason of the incident’ she added.
The girl students in JNU and their parents are concerned over safety on the campus. In 2011 the university was rocked by a sex scandal.
"The brutal attack has brought a bad name for the university which is a premier academic institution in the country. The university should take stern steps so that such incidents are never repeated," said a student.
The university is trying to build confidence among students, specially girl students, that the campus is safe. The vice chancellor, teachers association and students union appealed to parents to keep calm and help them ensure that the campus remains safe for the students. A university official said the university administration is taking every possible step to ensure that such incidents are not repeated. JNU Teachers Association, JNU Students Union and rector today visited the girl in hospital and ensured that proper treatment was given to her.
