After the reports of poor infrastructure, Delhi University (DU) Vice Chancellor Prof Dinesh today made surprise visits to some colleges and found several classes were empty during teaching hours.
The VC, accompanied by some university officials, visited Ramjas College followed by Kirori Mal College in the afternoon without prior notice and was surprised to find vacant classes.
"It is very surprising that some teachers claim they lack infrastructure to teach. Instead of calling all the students in the morning session classes, the sessions should also be held in the afternoon for proper use of existing infrastructure, which is sufficient for the enrolled students," the Vice Chancellor said.
However, some teachers claimed that the problem of infrastructure is there in the colleges. "Classes in colleges start at 8:30 a.m and the students want to study in the morning session….. and a teacher has to teach 18 periods a week. It is not logical for the students and teachers to attend a class in the morning and wait for another class till evening," said Nandita Narain, president Delhi University Teachers’ Association. Narain added that the infrastructure situation in off-campus colleges were not good.
Meanwhile, the university officials have decided to make more such surprise visits to colleges. The VC also laid emphasis on the foundation courses introduced in the programme. He said that foundation course teachers will be called in group for interactions and to know their experiences of teaching the new programme. "We are going to recognise the teachers who are developing innovative ideas and doing research under this programme. Some of these teachers will get an opportunity to visit different universities to know the research and expertise there and teach the same to students back in Delhi University.
