MLA jailed for 10 yrs for abetting suicide

A Bhopal court today sentenced Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Mrs Asha Rani and her husband and ex-MLA, Mr Ashok Vir Vikram Singh alias Bhaiya Raja, to imprisonment for 10 years for abetting the suicide of their maid servant, Tijjibai in 2007. Tijjibai had set herself ablaze at Bhaiya Raja&’s house  at Kolar Road locality in Bhopal on 21 May, 2007.
Additional Sessions Judge Saeeda Bano Rehman found Asha Rani, Bhaiya Raja and four other accused ~ Kanhaiya Lal Dubey, Narmada Pathak, Mizaji Dhimar and Gopal Thakur ~ guilty for abducting Tijjibai, illegally confining her, keeping her as a bonded labourer and sexually abusing her.  The sentenced 10 years’ imprisonment to Asha Rani and Bhaiya Raja  and imposed a fine of R 51,000 on them under various sections of the Indian Penal Code.
The other accused were sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment and  slapped with a fine of R 5,000 each. Asha Rani was not present in the court for the hearing today.
