Make efforts to reopen schools, Centre tells J-K

The Centre has asked the Jammu and Kashmir government to check burning of schools and make efforts for reopening them.

The schools in the valley have been closed since July 9 after unrest broke out following an encounter that resulted in killing of Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist Burhan Wani. At least 26 schools in various parts of the Valley were set ablaze during the period in various acts of vandalism.

According to reports the Home Ministry asked the state government to ensure protection of schools especially those which were vulnerable to attacks and make all attempts for reopening all educational institutions.

Reports also alluded to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s concern over the closure of institutions for a prolong period affecting thousands. Reopening of schools would be a great step towards restoring normalcy in Kashmir sources in home ministry felt.

Earlier the Home Ministry had directed the Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education to notify over 500 schools to conduct regular examinations.

Examinations for class 10 would commence from November 15 and culminate on November 28 while examinations for class 12 would start on November 14 and finish on December 3.

The Jammu and Kashmir High Court had taken serious note of closure of institutions. On Monday the court directed police and civil administration to ensure their schools protection besides unmasking the quot;mysterious enemies of educationquot; and deal with them with an quot;iron handquot;.
