Chief minister Mamata Banerjee today threatened to lead an agitation in Delhi with one crore people from Bengal if the Centre didn’t either stop collecting repayment of debts incurred by the previous government or restructure the debt repayment.
Mamata&’s threat bears resemblance to Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar&’s Hunkar rally in the Capital a few months ago, wherein he demanded special category status for Bihar.
"We will not beg for our dues from the Centre. Our MPs should first stage sit-in demonstration  in Delhi under the leadership of party’s all India general secretary Mukul Roy demanding the Centre to consider the issue,” said Miss Banerjee.
“If that demonstration fails to yield any result, I along with one crore people from the state besides party supporters from Assam, Manipur, Tripura, Jharkhand, Bihar, UP, Kerala and also from Rajasthan and other states will assemble in Delhi and join the protest. We will show the Centre what we can do,” Miss Banerjee said.
Asking if political vendetta was behind denial of debt restructuring, Miss Banerjee said, “When it comes to taking up the causes of the people, I do not care for protocol. I myself will go Delhi and demonstrate.”
“We will not bow to any pressure. West Bengal will show the way to others,” she said slamming the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre.
She said, "I am happy that some states will be benefited by the Rajan Committee recommendations. But will not tolerate that Bengal will stand to suffer significantly in spite of being a No. 1 debt-stressed state.”
Miss Banerjee has earlier critised the Centre for accepting the Raghuram Rajan Panel report on Facebook, saying the state would lose more than Rs 4000 crore of Central funds due to it.
Allocation of Central funds for Bengal will be reduced from 6.93 to 5.50 per cent, directly hitting a spate of of developm-ent projects in the state.
