Congress president Sonia Gandhi today reaffirmed her support, at a public rally here, to the beleaguered Mr Manmohan Singh while emphasising that the entire party stood behind the Prime Minister. This is the second time in two days that she has backed him in public.
This, after the party’s vice president, Mr Rahul Gandhi, had said that the Ordinance to protect convicted lawmakers, was “nonsense and should be torn.”
The Congress today said Mr Rahul Gandhi&’s opinion is “well taken” in the party and the government, indicating that the Cabinet could withdraw the controversial ordinance on convicted lawmakers when it meets on 2 October.
“The opinion of Rahul Gandhi holds value in Congress and government and it is well taken both by the party and the government. Let us wait for the government to respond,” party spokesperson Sandip Dikshit told reporters.
The proposed Act was cleared by the Cabinet under the aegis of the Prime Minister himself. Just yesterday, while speaking at Thiruvananthpuram she had praised Mr Singh for implementing social security schemes for the benefit of the marginalised sections of society.
Mr Gandhi&’s comments gave the impression that Mr Singh had lost the support of Mrs Gandhi and her partymen, something that the BJP capitalised on.
