The cash-strapped Bengal government has decided to lease out Calcutta Tramways Company (CTC) land in prime locations to rejuvenate transport corporations.
Around 373 cottahs surplus land from six depots of the CTC will be leased out to private parties for 99 years, state transport minister Madan Mitra said today. He was talking to reporters at Paribahan Bhawan this afternoon.
The surplus land will be leased out from Tollygunge, Kalighat, Belgachia, Shyambazar, Galif Street and Kidderpore depots.
The decision to lease out the surplus land was taken to rejuvenate the CTC and other state run transport corporations, Mr Mitra said.
The private parties who want to participate in the bid will have to pay Rs 1 lakh. The parties who get the possession of land after participating in the tendering process can run any business legally, principal secretary of the department Mr Alapan Bandopadhyay, said. The money will be collected in a demand draft in favour of CTC  and deposited with the State Bank of India. Later, the government will decide how the money would be utilised to rejuvenate the corporations after all the money is deposited with the bank, Mr Bandopadhyay said. The bidding process will begin on 18 November and end on 10 December. The land would be leased out at current market prices.
Mr Mitra criticised some of the land deals of the erstwhile Left Front government’s terming them as dubious.
