Centre to seek report from Assam, WB on tea garden wage

The Union Government on Tuesday said it will seek report from Assam and West Bengal about alleged anomalies in paying minimum wages to tea garden labourers.

Addressing a press conference here, Union Labour and Employment Minister Bandaru Dattatreya said the union government has been receiving complaints of not paying minimum wages to labourers in tea gardens of Assam and West Bengal.

"Although wage is a state subject, we will seek a report on minimum wages of tea industries in Assam and West Bengal. We will study and comment accordingly," he said.

Talking about the unorganised sector in general, Dattatreya said the government will amalgamate over 40 labour laws existing in the country.

He also said the Union Government has sought land from respective state governments for setting up regional offices of Employees Provident Fund Organisation in Gangtok, Imphal, Aizawl,Dimapur and Itanagar.

"We will also upgrade all employment exchanges across the country as model career counselling centres," Dattatreya said.

The Minister said the Union Government is committed to generate one crore employment in the next two years through his ministry.
