Many obese teens don”t see themselves as overweight

IANS |

Over a third of overweight or obese teenagers do not see themselves as being too heavy and think their weight is just good, says a study.

"Young people who think they are overweight when they are not can sometimes develop devastating eating disorders, so we are delighted that most of the normal weight teenagers had a realistic view of their body size," said professor Jane Wardle from Cancer Research UK Health Behaviour Research Centre at the University College London.

The study used data from around 5,000 13-15-year-olds who were asked about their weight and if they thought they were too heavy, about right or too light.

The team then checked their answers against their Body Mass Index (BMI) to see whether the reality matched the teenagers’ perceptions of themselves.

The study published in the International Journal of Obesity, found that almost three-quarters (73 per cent) of the teenagers had a BMI within the normal weight range.

A fifth (20 per cent) had a BMI in the overweight category and seven percent were categorised as obese.

Of these, around 40 percent thought they were about the right weight with very few (0.4 per cent) saying they were too light.

Eight in 10 of the normal weight teenagers correctly identified themselves as being about the right weight.

Carrying excess weight increases the risk of up to 10 different types of cancer, including cancers of the breast and bowel.

"It is important that young people who are too heavy have support to be more active and make healthy changes to their diet – being aware that they are above a healthy weight could be a first step. Making these changes as teenagers could help protect them from cancer as adults," said Julie Sharp, head of health information at Cancer Research UK.

IIT Kgp to deploy shadow teachers outside class

PTI |

Besides the regular faculty, IIT Kharagpur students would now get shadow teachers outside their classrooms to make the learning more inclusive.

The premier engineering institute has now decided to prepare a group of best students from each class to teach other students.

"From this academic session we will start a group of 10-12 students who are senior and very good in studies. They would also be given a stipend to act as shadow teachers. This would be a parallel system of learning outside the class," IIT Kgp director Partha Pratim Chakrabarti said.

The new system will ensure that no student is left out of the learning process.

"We will also be able to track the problems which these students are facing when it comes to learning," the director said.

As a trial, the concept of shadow teaching has been tested in the computer science department for the last three years.

They were known as ‘student self help groups’.

"And now we will start it in other departments from this year for the first year students," Chakrabarti said.

Another aspect of peer to peer learning would be through Moodle, an open-source education software for online learning.

"We have assigned a room for this where students can put queries and other students or teachers can answer it.

Everything would be available online," the director said.

Didn”t want my second film to be biopic: Omung Kumar

IANS |

After the success of his debut directorial "Mary Kom", through which he told Olympic bronze medallist MC Mary Kom’s story on the big screen, Omung Kumar is working on another biopic. But he says he wanted to avoid making a film of the same genre.

His new movie will be a biopic on Sarabjit Singh, late Indian death row prisoner in Pakistan.

"I had earlier decided not to make a biopic again, and I didn’t plan to make a biopic on Sarabjit. There was a good story in place, so I’m making the film. I had thought I’ll make a biopic perhaps after I try a few more films, but this story turned out to be so good that I kept all other stories aside and chose to proceed with this one," Kumar told IANS.

Despite being only a film-old as a director, Kumar, a successful set designer, has carved a niche for himself with his fresh style of filmmaking.

Asked about it, he said: "When there are new minds, obviously there are new kinds of thoughts. Audiences are adapting according to this thinking. Change comes about on its own…I’ve been in this industry for many years now and perhaps I’ll also make these kinds of commercial cinema some years later."

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has been finalised for playing the role of Sarabjit’s sister Dalbir Kaur in the film, while Randeep Hooda will be essaying the character of Sarabjit.

Poor infra, policies bottleneck for Assam”s growth: Assocham

PTI |

Poor infrastructure, limited connectivity and stringent policy measures are a few reasons for which Assam has failed to attract industries despite having 22 lakh jobless youth, industry body Assocham said.

"Assam, being the largest state in North Easterm region, alone has 2.2 million unemployed youth. A key constraint to the growth has been poor infrastructure and limited connectivity (roads, telecommunications and power supply), both within the region as well as with the rest of the country," Assocham said in its latest report.

The study paper ‘Nurturing the Start-ups ?- for building economy’, prepared jointly by Assocham and Resurgent India, said the total forest area of Assam is 27,645 sq km, but it is not being utilised due to stringent policies.

"Downstream ancillary industries could generate around 1,50,000 jobs, but the Government of Assam doesn’t have huge land bank to set up large industries and cannot acquire land by displacing small farmers," it added.

The region, connected to the rest of India by a narrow stretch of land called the "chicken’s neck", needs better infrastructure to support and ensure significant investments and developmental aids, the study said.

"Lack of skilled manpower, high unemployment and land prices are other major hurdles in the region," it added.

Assocham, which organised a summit on Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) industry of Assam, also announced to open its permanent regional office in Guwahati.

Assocham Secretary General DS Rawat said the chamber shall set up an institute for training entrepreneurs and help food processing skill development.

"We have decided to house our North Eastern regional headquarter in Guwahati, primarily to focus on employment generation, skill development and promotion of organic products to enhance income of farmers," he added.

Monsoon tourism takes off in a big way

IANS |

Sachin and Shikha Sharma were told by their friends not to travel during the monsoon. But the couple, who got married last August, wanted to again visit their honeymoon destination Goa – this time during the monsoon to enjoy the rain.

They were happy with the travel package, but what thrilled them more was that they were able to prove the naysayers wrong.

"It was heavenly. This was the first time that we travelled during monsoon and let me tell you it was something," Shikha, who works in a BPO, told IANS.

"It (Goa) wasn’t crowded as we see during peak season (from November to February) and that added to its charm. The cool breeze, the heavenly scent of the earth during rains, the food ..everything added to sizzle our romance. I wish I could have prolonged my stay.

"My husband was happy too as the trip fitted our budget," she said.

The Sharmas are not the only ones. More and more Indians are now venturing out during the monsoon. They are mostly the adventurous kind or couples who want to avoid the crowds and enjoy and experience the rain.

DS Rawat, secretary general of The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM), told IANS that monsoon tourism (from June to October) is a new concept, but "is fast emerging as a potential season for hospitality industry".

Ranjeet Oak, Chief Business Officer-Holidays, MakeMyTrip, India’s leading online travel company that was founded in 2000 and pioneered the entire online travel industry in the country, said the monsoon is the best time for those looking for nature-oriented experiences.

"It was not considered a popular travel season in India, but the sentiment is fast-changing in the last couple of years, with monsoon travel picking up significantly," Oak told IANS.

He said the huge drivers for this are the fantastic deals offered by higher-star hotels, especially resorts and five-star properties, to boost occupancy in this otherwise lean travel period.

Also, airline flash sales fuel cheap travel during this period.

The average spend for a monsoon holiday ranges from Rs.11,000 to Rs.45,000 ($175 to $715) per person depending on the destination and category of hotels or resorts.

According to tour and travel experts, Kerala and Goa are the top travel destinations during the monsoon.

These are followed by Coorg in Karnataka; Udaipur and Mount Abu in Rajasthan; Lonavala, Mahabaleshwar and Matheran in Maharashtra; Darjeeling in West Bengal, Shillong and Cherrapunjee in Meghalaya; Mussorie, Nanital, Rishikesh and Kasauli in Uttarakhand; Leh in Ladakh and Port Blair in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

If you want to try out some unbeaten tracks during this season then, according to Hari Nair, founder and CEO of HolidayIQ.com, try out Dhanaulti and Munsiayari (both in Uttarakhand), Bharatpur (Rajasthan), Kakkabe (Karnataka), Netarhat (Jharkahnd) and Panhala (Maharashtra).

HolidayIQ.com is India’s first travel community with over two million members from 80+ Indian cities and the first holiday planning website.

Sharat Dhall, President, Yatra.com, India’s leading online travel company, said this season they are looking at growing about 57 per cent as compared to the last two seasons.

According to him, quick weekend getaways for couples, DINKs or groups of friends are the flavour of the season.

"If we look at emerging trends, the spending has certainly gone up and I also feel that people are taking holidays more frequently than before," Dhall told IANS.

He could be right about that.

After their "beautiful" vacation, Sachin and Shikha are already planning their next "weekend" trip at the end of this month.

"I think this was the first time I didn’t mind the rain. It was fun getting wet. I had hired a scooty and explored Goa like I had not done in my previous trips. The ride through the lush, greenery soothed me. It was just beautiful," Sachin told IANS.

"My wife and I had a fantastic time. I don’t know why people say ‘don’t travel during this time’. It is comparatively cheaper too. I think monsoon travel should be tried by everyone.

"I am now planning a short trip this month, most probably to the Valley of Flowers (in Uttarakhand). I have heard this is the time to visit it. I am already looking forward to it," Sachin added.

Happy rain-fed hollidaying!
