Champions League: Sanchez strikes, PSG-Arsenal share spoils

Paris Saint-German were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by Arsenal in their Champions League Group A opener on Tuesday night at the Parc des Princes thanks to the hosts woeful finishing.

The game ended on a sour note, with both sides being reduced to 10 men after Marco Verrrati and Olivier Giroud clashed off the ball and were subsequently given their marching orders in the 93rd minute.

PSG opened their account in the very first minute, as full-back Serge Aurier&’s sumptuous cross was headed into goal by an unmarked Edinson Cavani.

New signing Shkodran Mustafi&’s marking was non-existent and his participation in future games will be in serious doubt should this trend continue.

Cavani, playing in his preferred centre forward role after long last, was guilty of multiple misses as the game went on, and PSG were unable to add to their lead.

Aurier was in some form, tormenting Nacho Montreal to no end, as he bombed down the flank again and again. While Angel Di Maria and Adrien Rabiot impressed in patches, it was the young full-back who was the star for the hosts.

For Arsenal however, David Ospina was the saviour hands down, with some spectacular saves to deny Cavani and co on multiple occasions.

Alex Iwobi started in place of Theo Walcott, and Arsene Wenger&’s faith in him was justified as he was crucial in Arsenal&’s equaliser.

The 20-year-old was the first to reach Mesut Ozil&’s deflected cross, and while his shot was superbly saved by Alphonse Areola, Alexis Sanchez made no mistake with the rebound to level proceedings in the 78th minute.

Other notable results: Barcelona thrashed Celtic 7-0, thanks to a Luis Suarez brace and Lionel Messi hat-trick. Atletico Madrid edged PSV Eindhoven 1-0 by virtue of a Saul Niguez goal. Bayern Munich romped to a 5-0 victory over Rostov as young Joshua Kimmich with an unlikely brace.
