Chennai Test: India off to firm start after early frustration on Day 2

After a tough struggle, the opening pair KL Rahul (30) and Parthiv Patel (29) gave India a steady start as they were at 60 without any loss of wicket, trailing England by 417 runs at stumps on Day 2.
The impressive crowd attendance at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, witnessed India’s strike back at England, who troubled the hosts for more than five sessions of the Test match.
England frustrated the Indians to the paramount on Saturday as they rode on Moeen Ali’s 146-run knock to post competitive 477 runs in their first innings. Ali’s 262-ball heroic knock was well supported by the lower-order, consisting of Laim Dawson (66*) and Adil Rashid (60).
Along with Ali, batsmen like Joe Root (88) and Jonny Bairstow (49) also contributed to stabilising England at the top-order and middle-order.
Dawson, 26, was a sheer charm on his Test debut as he, along with Rashid, put on 108-run partnership for the eighth-wicket.
Post Rashid’s dismissal, Dawson kept on dominating Indian bowlers, who couldn’t dismiss him throughout the day despite many attempts.
At one point, Dawson reached the record highest strike rate (59) by an England No.8 batsman on Test debut. Earlier in 1979, David Bairstow had got the strike rate of 59, that too against India.
For India, Ravindra Jadeja (3/106) led the bowling assault, claiming three big wickets on Day 1, however, there wasn’t any prize for the Indian tweaker on the second day.
By the end of England’s innings, Indian pacers Ishant Sharma (2/42) and Umesh Yadav (2/73) had two wickets each to celebrate, while spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Amit Mishra took the scalp of Ben Stokes (6) and Jake Ball (11) to contribute in the bowling attack.
