Costa saves Chelsea’s blushes at Swansea

Diego Costa once again was the saviour for Chelsea as his brace ensured the Londoners came away with a point against Swansea at the Liberty Stadium on Sunday night.

On a weekend when Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City won their respective games, Antonio Conte&’s men managed a creditable 2-2 draw against a team that is known to be unpredictable.

Continuing with a 4-1-4-1 formation, Chelsea started without their £34 million man David Luiz, who watched proceedings from the bench along with newbie Marcos Alonso.

And it didn’t take them long to get the breakthrough, with familiar suspect Diego Costa finishing low to Lukas Fabianski&’s left in the 18th minute.

Oscar got his first assist of the season, calmly placing the ball into the path of the oncoming Costa after some patient buildup from the Blues.

And they almost doubled their lead scant moment&’s later, when Eden Hazard jinked his way past a few defenders but was denied by Fabianski&’s telling touch.

Costa went close and probably should have tapped in after John Terry&’s flick from a corner found him unmarked at the far post, yet the striker inexplicably could not find the net.

Despite having plenty of chances, the Blues were unable to find a second goal which would have really put them in a comfortable position.

Post-interval, Swansea looked like a transformed team, and thanks to the sizzling pace of Modou Barrow and craft of Glyfi Sigurdssson, they even got a penalty in the 59th minute.

Thibaut Courtois clumsily tripped the Icelandic midfielder, earning a caution in the process and leaving referee Andre Mariner with no doubts about pointing to the spot.

Sigurdsson doesn’t miss many penalties, and his spot-kick sent Courtois the wrong way, and suddenly the Liberty Stadium was roaring once again.

They had another chance to cheer, just minutes later, when Gary Cahill was caught dawdling in possession by Leroy Fer, and the Dutch international seized the chance to get the hosts ahead for the first time in the game.

Fer&’s shot didn’t beat Courtois cleanly, but despite a desperately lunging Cahil&’s best efforts, the ball nestled in the goal in the 62nd minute.

Antonio Conte sent on Michy Batshuayi, hoping for an another super-sub performance from him, but it was Costa who proved to be the saviour with a jaw-dropping overhead goal in the 81st minute which set the stage for a nerve-racking finish.

Ultimately neither side were unable to find a killer third goal and had to be content with shared spoils.

Chelsea next play Liverpool late on Friday night while Swansea travel to Southampton on Saturday evening.
