Majestic Manchester United hunt Foxes down

Manchester United got their swagger back in style, giving defending champions Leicester City a 4-1 hiding in the English Premier League&’s early kick-off on Saturday.

Three losses on the trot had invited massive pressure onto the English giants, and they responded with a statement against a team that are clearly struggling after their heroics in the 2015-16 season.

Four first-half goals have become a rarity at Old Trafford in recent years, yet that is exactly what happened as the hosts played some slick, free-flowing football to overrun the Foxes.

There were plenty of talking points in a game that had goals of the highest order, but Mourinho&’s team selection set fans and experts  in a frenzy.

Under-pressure to drop the underperforming Wayne Rooney for a while now, the Portuguese tactician finally relented, and his side never once felt like they were missing a key player over the course of 90 minutes.

Jesse Lingard, Marcus Rashford and Juan Mata played behind the powerful Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and their football was a joy to behold. Yet despite their expressive football, two defenders combined well to score the opening goal.

Daley Blind sent in a blinder of a corner (Pun unintended) and Chris Smalling rose highest to give the hosts a deserved lead.

Ander Herrera, another player in the side after initially being out of favour, was quite tidy in possession, looking to release Rashford and Ibrahimovic any chance he got .

The young Rashford should have scored he was set up by Ibrahimovic after a breathtaking United counter-attack, but the his composure left him down at the end.

Turns out it didn’t matter, as Juan Mata doubled the lead, with a wonderful team move involving Pogba and Lingard and the Spaniard finishing well in the 37th minute.

Leicester hadn’t turned up it seemed, and paid for it dearly as they switched off when Daley Blind&’s low corner was flicked on by Mata into Rashford&’s path. The teen sensation doesn’t miss tap-ins and Old Trafford was rocking and Mourinho was all smiles for a change.

And four minutes before half-time, United fans roared with delight when £100 million man Paul Pogba outmuscled Christian Fuchs to head home his first senior goal for the Red Devils.

The relief was evident on the French midfielders face as he celebrated near the corner flag with his customary ‘dab’ celebration.

Leicester had the one standout chance, when Marc Albrighton skewed his shot wide, and had he scored, the game might have been slightly more competitive.

As it was the Red Devils went in with a seemingly unassailable lead at the half-time interval.

The second half they did take their foot of the pedal understandably, and young Demarai Gray made them pay with a goal of the highlight reel variety. It takes some quality to beat David de Gea from distance, and his cut-in and shot was exactly that.

Not a perfect performance from the scoreline perhaps, but one Mourinho will readily accept as his side rise to third in the table, at least until Saturday&’s fixtures are completed.

For Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri, it is back to the drawing board as his side are 12th in the table and could be uncomfortably close to the relegation zone by Sunday.
