Rio 2016: Shooter Abhinav Bindra finishes fourth, misses medal

India’s shooter Abhinav Bindra on Monday signed off his Olympic campaign by finishing at the fourth place in 10 metre air rifle event, narrowly missing out on a medal at the Olympic shooting centre in Rio Olympics.

This is the same event where Bindra had won the gold medal in Beijing Olympics 2008.

He scored 163.8 points in the finals.

Bindra started well, but a couple of wayward shots cost him dearly as he lost in the bronze medal play-off to finish fourth.

Monday’s disappointment will see the curtains come down on the glittering career of the 2008 Beijing Olympics gold medallist — India’s only individual Olympic gold — as he had earlier announced that he will bid adieu to his shooting career after Rio.

"It would have been better to finish career with a medal. To finish fourth in world is not bad," Bindra said after the event.

Earlier, he had qualified for the final round by scoring 625.7 points in the qualification round.

Bindra’s compatriot and London Olympics bronze medalist Gagan Narang could not perform well and failed to qualify for the finals in 10 m air rifle, the same event in which he won bronze in 2012.

He finished on 23rd position with total points of 621.7.

Narang won a bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics in 10m air rifle event. He also scored four medals in individual and pair events at the 2010 Commonwealth Games and the 2006 CWG.

Recently, he won the silver medal in 50m rifle prone and bronze in 50m rifle 3 Positions at the Incheon 2014 Asian Games.
