Bridging divides

The department of Arabic and Persian of Calcutta University held an international seminar on the theme, “Taqreeb – Propagation of Harmonious Relations in Mughal, British and Independent India”, on Tuesday at the University campus of Salt Lake.

State Education Minister Partha Chatterjee was present at the occasion along with Siddiqullah Chowdhury, minister of mass education and library sciences. Also present was Ashutosh Ghosh, vicechancellor of the university along with prominent scholar of Arabic and Persian languages Abdul Aziz Qutbuddin. Speaking of the relevance of the topic chosen Chatterjee said, “India as a country is marked by the multiplicity of ethos, diversity of culture.

There is a need for a propagation of harmony among this diversity.” He added that India carries forward the tradition of the Mughals and these classical languages of Arabic and Persian must be taught to the young generation. Vice-chancellor of Calcutta University Prof. Ghosh, talking on the same lines, said, “In every para and every village, Muslims and Hindus coexist together. We have never been taught to differenciate between Muslims and Hindus. In fact, the division of the country is meaningless when done for religion.” Qutbuddin highlighted the “taqreeb”, meaning “to bring people together”, as the need of the hour, There are forces, he said, that want to curb this unity and create tension but it is upon the scholars to bring people together.
