CBI demands details on Madan”s SSKM stay

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday moved the Alipore Court seeking its intervention in collecting details about the number of days the state transport minister Madan Mitra has stayed in hospitals during his judicial custody.

Mitra was arrested in connection with the multicrore Saradha Group scam on 12 December last year and he was sent to the Alipore Central Correctional Home after being remanded in judicial custody. He was admitted a number of times to SSKM Hospital for his illnesses. At present he is admitted in the Woodburn Ward of the hospital.

The CBI had sent a letter to the correctional home authorities around 15 days ago seeking details on the number of days Mitra had stayed in hospital. The correctional home authorities are yet to provide the details to the Central investigating agency.

Today, the CBI&’s lawyer submitted that it is important to get the details for the sake of investigation. But the correctional home authorities have not provided the same despite repeated requests. The investigating agency sought the court’s intervention to get the details as early as possible. The agency is now waiting for the court’s direction.

In the meantime, the hearing of the bail petition of Mitra has been fixed on 6 August by the Division Bench of Justice Nishita Mhatre and Justice Asha Arora of Calcutta High Court on Monday.

Last Friday, when Mitra’s counsel prayed for time and the CBI counsel too followed with a prayer to adjourn the matter, the court had decided to fix the date of hearing of the bail plea on Monday.

The matter was earlier recused by the Division Benches presided over by Justice Asim Roy, Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice Girish Gupta. The bail petition was originally scheduled to be heard before Justice Mhatre but the minister’s counsel appealed for hearing of the matter at the lower court.
