Commuters taken for a ride by autorickshaw drivers

Commuters at Salt Lake on Monday enjoyed surprise free rides in police vans, faced with a strike by auto rickshaw drivers for the past two days. And, within hours the strike was withdrawn and the autos were back.

Thousands of commuters had been having a harrowing time after they were caught in a war of attrition between the police and the local auto drivers. An auto driver had hit the vehicle of additional commissioner of police Shivani Tiwari and allegedly misbehaved with the senior police officer.

Subsequently, the traffic police asked the auto drivers to shift their auto stand to Karunamoyee. The auto drivers went on a strike protesting against the police directive. But this morning green police asked commuters to board police vehicles. What was more they were not needed to pay for the service.

It was this initiative from the Bidhannagar City police that "compelled" the auto rickshaw unions to accept the police proposal to shift the auto stand.Around 1.30 pm,the auto unions agreed to discuss the matter with the police and called off their strike soon after. The auto drivers will operate their vehicles from the new stand for the next three days, but if they get fewer passengers they would return to their old stand.
