The conference aims at disseminating information about the latest techniques and strategies that are being used currently in the packaging of processed food.
India being a major producer of food, the need to scientifically package has gained utmost importance. The multi-billion dollar food industry suffers setback as almost 40 per cent of the fresh produce of frusta and vegetables go wasted due to improper harvesting, lack of proper storage facility, mishandling and unscientific packaging.
“India is known as a food factory to the world but despite having such a large raw material base in the country the international trade of India is only 1.3 per cent. Only 2 per cent of fruits and vegetables and 15 per cent of milk are processed. As a result average growth of processed food sector is only 7 per cent” said Prof. N.C. Saha, director of IIP.
He further said that the government of India, however, has made a target of increasing the growth to 20 per cent by 2020.
The IIP has been organising seminars in various cities like Delhi, Agartala, Goa, Siliguri, Bengaluru targeting individuals of the packaging industry to identify the problems of the sector and increase awareness about the sector.
