Siliguri, 5 February
Foresters expressed concern after the police recovered a piece of elephant bone from the Dhupguri police station in Jalpaiguri. Police said they have started investigations to find the source of the wildlife item.
During routine patrolling, police last night came across a man who started to flee, leaving behind a sack, near a village named Mallikshobha. Though they failed to nab the person, they found a piece of the elephant bone.
The police then informed the foresters of the matter. Forest officials, including a ranger, Mr Gour Acharjee, today examined the wildlife item and took it under departmental custody.
The divisional forest officer in Jalpaiguri, Mr Bidyut Sarkar, said the department has taken the matter seriously and will begin a probe.
According to Mr Sarkar, forest officials would interact with the people where the wild item was recovered.
“The bone is almost one foot long and it is very old. We don’t understand how local people collected the old wildlife item when the forest department usually burns elephant&’s carcasses,” Mr Sarkar said. He, however, added that many years ago, the department used to bury the carcasses.
