Siliguri, 5 February
Junior doctors associated with the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH) today staged a protest against the decision of medical superintendent to ‘suspend’ drinking water supply in a few important departments.
The doctors served a deputation to the medical superintendent, Dr AN Sarkar, who is also the vice-principal of the NBMCH, on three issues.
Dr Sarkar, along with other officials, interacted with the junior doctors over the issues and tried to pacify them on reasonable grounds. Staging a protest in front of the medical superintendent&’s chamber, more than 10 junior doctors alleged that Dr Sarkar used ‘indecorous words’ when they protested against the drinking water suspension in some wards like medical, gynaecology, pediatric and emergency.
A house staff, Mr Tushar Kanti Sarkar, said the NBMCH authorities had decided to supply the drinking water last year and that it was decided that the water for the patients would be supplied later. “However, authorities suddenly suspended the supply for junior doctors.”
The doctors also demanded that the authorities abolish the present system of reserving a bed under the state minister&’s quota at the critical care unit CCU of the NBMCH at a time when patients of tea plantation workers are being deprived of proper medical care.
Asked to comment, Dr Sarkar said: “We have detected gross financial irregularities in the drinking water supply process. I objected to sign a false bill.
“The amount of drinking water purchased was way higher than the actual requirement for the junior doctors.”
“The demand for safe drinking water is very legitimate. I have assured them that the authorities would supply the water to them through a proper system,” Dr Sarkar added.
According to him, the CCU in-charge, Dr S Bose, was present in his interaction with the junior doctors. “It was proved that the junior doctors’ allegation was not correct,” he said.
