Left to protest against harassment on procuring ration cards

The elected representatives of Left Front will stage an agitation protesting against alleged harassment of people to get the digital ration cards in urban and rural areas in Siliguri Sub Division on 19 August.

The digitised ration cards under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) have been made mandatory to get the subsidised food grains.

“The people are facing problems and they are being harassed… There are widespread complaints of errors in names, addresses and others.  According to the rules 75% population of the rural areas while 50% of the urban areas should be brought under NFSA. The authority concerned has failed to clear the confusion. The right to food is a fundamental right. We have decided to raise our voice, so all the elected Left representatives will submit a deputation to the food controller in Siliguri on 19 August,”said the Darjeeling district Left Front convener Jibesh Sarkar in Siliguri on Tuesday.

The Siliguri Mahakuma Parishad sabhadhipati Tapas Sarkar said, “About 5,35,221 people in the rural areas were entitled to get the digital ration cards but we have been informed 4,80,000 people will get the cards but only 2,77,621 were given the cards.”

Sarkar alleged even the forms were sold at higher prices.

“The forms should have been given free of cost but we have information that in some places the forms are being sold at high prices. The situation is complex and people have a lot of grievances on this issue,” he added
