Partha Chatterjee in Singur for land recce

State government on Saturday continued the land survey of the 997 acre of Singur land for the second consecutive day for returning it to the farmers as per the Supreme Court order, with education minister Partha Chatterjee visiting the site to monitor the on-going work.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had earlier said one minister would be present at the site every day apart from Rabindranath Bhattacharya and Becharam Manna, who are local leaders involved with the Singur land acquisition movement from the beginning.

Following this, Chatterjee reached Singur on Saturday morning to supervise the progress of land survey as well as to finalise the arrangements for holding the victory celebrations-cum-administrative review meet and public gathering scheduled for 14 September.

The Tata project gate which was under lock and key for the last ten years on Saturday was broken down by the district police.

Satellite-based (GPS) mapping and drones carried out aerial survey as huge contingent of workers and employees from various departments were pressed into service for cleaning and preparing ground work for plotting of the land.

The grass cutters and the harvesters have cleared off 150 acres of land which had been covered with weeds. The plotting of the mapped area is likely to start tomorrow, officials said.

Additional district magistrate land revenue (ADMLR) P Maji said that work is going on a war footing. We will work round the clock and during the night time, work will be done with the help of floodlights. We will complete the cleaning and the land survey will be finished in two weeks, Maji said.

Responding to media persons,  Chatterjee said "I am quite happy with the progress of work. It is expected that the plotting of the entire area can be started from tomorrow. The government is well prepared with every assistance that may be required to complete the entire process of handing over land to the affected farmers of Singur."
