President opens mega food park at Jangipur

President Pranab Mukherjee on Wednesday inaugurated a food park set up in public-privatepartnership mode at Talai area of Jangipur in Murshidabad district. The Centrally-funded business establishment called Bengal Mega Food Park, came up as a subsidised project under both the state and the Central governments’ food processing ministries. The minister of state for labour Jakir Hossain of the Trinamul Congress is the private co-owner of the multi-crore project, sources said.

The Union minister of food processing, Harsimrat Kaur Badal, who accompanied Mukherjee in the programme, said,“For the mega food park project,I am grateful to our finance minister, Arun Jaitley who allowed me to grant a sum of Rs 132 crore, out of which Rs 50 crore is subsidy.” The President also attended the first convocation programme of Management Development Institute or MDI, a reputed B-School that set up its Murshidabad campus at Jangipur at the instance of Mukherjee in the year 2014 when he was MP from Jangipur constituency as well as the finance minister.

A number of state and Central ministers attended the programme. Mukherjee said after opening the mega food park, “I would like to request both the state and the central governments to keep the final price of the processed products within the reach of potential customers.” The President in his address waxed nostalgic when he said, “Jangipur has become like my relative. It was from Jangipur Lok Sabha constituency that I was elected MP. Adhir Chowdhury (now the Pradesh Congress president) made it possible.”

After Pranab Mukherjee was elected President of the country, his son, Abhijit Mukherjee,was also elected as MP from Jangipur constituency. The junior Mukherjee is the current MP from Jangipur,representing the Congress party.
