Scottish Church College V-P to officiate as principal

Following the principal&’s resignation, the vice-principal of Scottish Church College will officiate as principal, the governing body of the college said on Thursday.

The former principal Amit Abraham&’s resignation last week had created quite a stir in the media raising several questions about the internal affairs of the college administration.

The ‘disheartened’ students of the college had in fact launched a hunger strike to bring back the principal and convince the governing body that the students wanted Abraham to continue as principal.

The college authorities had decided to convene a meeting in this regard and it was being presumed by supporters and students that the authorities will urge the principal to reconsider his resignation. However, dampening the hopes of several students, the governing body has decided to appoint the vice-principal, Arpita Mukherjee, of the college as the teacher-incharge from Thursday.

The notification published on Thursday categorically mentions that the governing body has “unanimously accepted” Abraham&’s resignation and “released him from service with immediate effect.”

The unanimous decision suggests that though Abraham may have been popular with the students, he had definitely incurred the ire of a section of the governing body. The principal had, however, repeatedly said that he had no intention of taking back his resignation. “It&’s my irrevocable decision to resign from the post of principal,” he said.

“We had really hoped that our beloved former principal will be asked to continue in his post but that did not happen. We are utterly disappointed,” Sayak Chatterjee, general secretary of the college union, said. The students’ union, however, plans to launch a “much bigger” protest to bring back their beloved principal, the students said.
