Gangtok, 5 February
The ruling Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) today hit out at the Opposition, Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) for daring the chief minister, Mr Pawan Kumar Chamling to participate in a debate on issues concerning the state.
At a programme organised to mark the SKM&’s first anniversary yesterday, the party&’s president, Mr P S Golay had challenged Mr Chamling to an ‘open debate’ with him ‘anywhere and on any issue.’
Notably, Mr Golay was formally anointed as the SKM  president  yesterday, the day the party celebrated the first year of its formation Ridiculing the challenge, the ruling party’s press statement issued today said the SKM leader should learn the rudiments of debate from the Gram Panchayat functionaries before throwing the gauntlet to the chief minister. They would hold him as one worth debating with in case he passes the initial tests, the SDF statement stated.
“Mr Golay is cracking a joke at himself by making such humorous and unbelievable statement,” the release added.  “If he fails in the test with the panchayat presidents we will not entertain such ridiculous matters and waste our time and energy,” SDF party publicity secretary, Mr Chudamani Mishra, said.
Accusing Mr Golay of hijacking the idea of debate from the chief minister himself, the SDF statement said Mr Chamling is for  a healthy debate on political and contemporary issues.
“However, no Opposition party has ever dared accept Mr Chamling&’s challenge,” the statement added.
“For someone like Mr Golay, such statements and ideas are unsuited. He is trying to act like a joker or an actor,” the statement said.
