Security across the state has been beefed up following an alert from the Centre in view of Monday&’s terrorist attack at Gurudaspur in Punjab.

A senior police officer said that the Central intelligence agencies have asked the state police and Border Security force (BSF) to strengthen security in bordering areas in districts including Malda, Murshidabad, North Dinajpur and North 24-Parganas.

All the important places and establishments in the city, including places frequented by VIPs, were provided with extra security.

“All the officers in traffic were asked to frisk vehicles entering the city properly. Even we have asked the concerned sections of the city police&’s Special Branch to monitor the details of foreign nationals entering the city,” the officer added.

Security was beefed up at the NSC Bose International Airport. Officials of Airports Authority of India, CISF and other units of the Bomb Assessment Committee including the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad were seen to be carrying out a thorough search.

“Following the terrorist strike at Gurudaspur in Punjab, we have received instruction from the bureau of civil aviation and Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and accordingly, the measures have been taken and security has been beefed up,” a senior airport official said.

Security at the main gate and the entry point of the airport has been tightened. After the alert it is being ensured that the vehicles entering the airport area were thoroughly checked.

Both the Eastern Railway and South Eastern Railway have upped the security. A senior officer of the railways said that they beefed up security as railway could be a soft target for terrorists. Authorities are also giving importance to another alert that said different groups, including Maoists, throughout the country are targeting Railway. “Information has come that Maoists are targeting Howrah, Sealdah, Kolkata and Metro Railway stations for staging of sabotage activities. Maoist posters have been found at some railway stations of Eastern Railway like Ratanpur and Kajra railway stations in Jamalpur- Kiul section of Eastern Railway&’s Malda Division,”said a statement released by the railway.

Sniffer Dogs were engaged for checking at important stations, passenger areas and trans. Special watch has been arranged at crowded places like computerized reservation offices, cloak rooms, waiting halls, toilets.

Quick Reaction Teams have been formed at all the divisions of Eastern Railway, said a spokesperson of the railway.
