Siliguri, 12 March
The Opposition leader in the Assembly, Surjyakanta Misra, today sought votes for the candidate of the Left Front, which he said has worked and will further work for the development of Darjeeling and for a powerful autonomy there, while also maintaining the unity of the plains and the Hills.
Mr Misra said the Congress, BJP and the Trinamul Congress are playing “narrow politics” to harvest gains during the elections.
"The Left Front has always worked for the development of the Hills and
for a powerful autonomy. We did not budge an inch from our principles. We are still saying what we have said earlier. The party has always laid emphasis on the democratic aspirations of the Hills,” Mr Misra told a press conference here. “But some opportunist parties like the Congress, BJP and Trinamul Congress played narrow politics, especially during the time of elections. But their tall promises did not see the light of day. They betrayed the people and never addressed their issues," he added.
"We appeal to the people to support the Left Front candidate," he said.
Mr Misra slammed the state government for ‘creating a division of politics’.
"We are trying to make people understand what the Left Front did for the Hills, including initiatives to set up the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council," he said.
Referring to Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha (GJMM) chief Bimal Gurung&’s recent stand that the Left Front government was better than the present Trinamul Congress state government, Mr Misra said they had good relations with the GJMM.
"We even protested when the state government interfered in the functioning of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA)," he said.
Mr Misra further said the Darjeeling district CPI-M is working on an alternative proposal to permanently settle the Darjeeling issue and it is expected to be released in Darjeeling on 14 March.
