WB Motion Picture Artists’ Forum holds theater fest

In possibly the first-of-its-kind theater competition in the country, the West Bengal Motion Picture Artist’s Forum today staged five plays by lesser known member-actors of the 2200-member strong apex body on the eve of Independence day.

The programme was initiated by veteran actor Soumitra Chatterjee and Tollywood star Prosenjit among others.

Popular actor Saswata Chatterjee, who is also turning up in a Anurag Basu production after Sujoy Ghosh’s ‘Kahaani’, said, "Many of these lesser known actors are expected to get bigger breaks in film and television after today’s show."

"So far as I understand, there had been no similar effort in any other entertainment industry in the country. And definitely not in Eastern India," Saswata, a senior member of the forum, said.

Actor Sabyasachi Chakraborty said, "This is a move by our forum to give chance to those junior artists who hadn’t got much exposure so far."

Director Goutam Ghosh, one of the jury members, along with Kaushik Ganguly and others, said, "I have always supported their activities since inception and will be with them. Junior artistes are the backbone of any industry. I was impressed by some of their performances."

Bengali film superstar Prosenjit Chatterjee said, "Legend Soumitra Chatterjee has been with the forum since its inception. And he is behind us in all the moves including this theatre festival."

"I will always be with the forum and such initiatives," Soumitra said.

Five plays ‘Palabar Path Nei’, ‘Khoddar Kasam Jaan’, ‘Kata Chhera’, ‘Sundar’ and ‘Satyasandho’ were staged at the festival – directed by popular theatre-film actors and members of the forum.
