Sensex tanks 444 pts, Tata Steel closes 5.3% down

Extending Friday&’s declines amid profit booking and weak global cues, domestic equity markets closed first trading session of the week with slumps.

The Sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) ended 444 points down at 28,354 and the Nifty at the National Stock Exchange (NSE) closed 151 points lower at 8,715.

On Friday, the Sensex had closed 248 points down at 28,797 and the Nifty had closed 86 points lower at 8,867.

In the broader markets, BSE Midcap index slumped 3 per cent while Smallcap index plunged 2.4 per cent.

Among the BSE sectoral indices, Realty index closed with the biggest cut, down 5.2 per cent, while IT index became the top gainer with a jump of 0.9 per cent. 

Top gainers in the Sensex-30 pack: Infosys (up 1.7 per cent), Reliance Industries (up 0.3 per cent), TCS (up 0.3 per cent) and Wipro (up 0.2 per cent).

Top losers in the Sensex-30 pack: Tata Steel (down 5.3 per cent), Adani Ports (down 4.4 per cent), SBI (down 4.3 per cent), L&T (down 3.7 per cent) and NTPC (down 3.6 per cent).

Meanwhile, the Rupee was trading 24 paise down at 66.92 against the US Dollar.
