Three govt offices set ablaze as Centre reviews situation in Manipur

As the Union government on Friday reviewed the crisis situation in violence-hit Manipur in the wake of the ongoing economic blockade of the National Highway-2, violence continued. Three government offices were burnt down by unidentified people, sources said.

Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju urged the state government to resolve the "worrisome" conditions aggravating to a "humanitarian crisis".

"This is a humanitarian crisis. We want that the Manipur government end the blockade as early as possible. Whatever assistance from the central government is required, we will give," Rijiju said.

The high-level meeting attended by Rijiju, Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh and other top officials of the Centre and state discussed the state's critical situation.

Meanwhile, three government offices, including that of the office of the recently created Kamjong district, were set ablaze on Friday by unidentified persons.

"Around five to six unidentified persons came around 3 am and torched the office of the Sub-Divisional Office," newly appointed Deputy Commissioner Armstrong Pame of Kamjong district said.

In another incident on Friday, two rooms of mini Secretariat were also burnt down by unidentified people in Ukhrul district, a police officer said.

The NH 2 blockade by the United Naga Council (UNC) has been continuing since November 1, disrupting normalcy in the landlocked state.

It has led to an acute shortage of essential goods in the state and a breakdown in law and order.
