Delhi Police on Saturday started an awareness campaign to promote digital banking and cashless transactions among its personnel.
At the event to launch the campaign, Police commissioner Alok Kumar Verma asked his officers to use mobile wallets and netbanking.
“At least 8,000 police officials are using banking apps.
This number is going to increase in the next few days. We have contacted 3,271 bank branches and 6,109 bank managers and employees for educating people about cashless transactions. At least 1,700 meetings have been held in commercial areas to educate people on e-banking and mobile wallets,” he said.
The event was also attended by Hansraj Gangaram Ahir, Union MoS, Home; Meenakshi Lekhi, MP from New Delhi; Vijender Gupta, MLA from Rohini; 250 Police Mitras, and 350 members of RWAs and market welfare associations.
Ahir congratulated the Delhi Police for making efforts to train its personnel on digital transactions and also asserted demonetisation has brought about positive results.
He said peace has returned to the Valley and many Naxals and Maoists have surrendered after demonetisation.
“Even though political attempts were made to ensure this wasn't successful, 90-92 per cent of the people welcomed this decision. Many Naxals and Maoists have surrendered.
“There was a huge narcotics trade going on and was destroying the youths. After this move, that has been halted.
There was unrest in Kashmir for the last five months but this move has brought peace to the Valley on a large scale,” Ahir said.
Verma also said Delhi Police personnel made sure no untoward incidents were reported in the capital in the wake of demonetisation.
“We made elaborate security arrangements. There has been no untoward incident reported in the city. Owing to demonetisation, there were many dharnas but despite those protests, our jawans and officers pacified them with patience.
We also requested bank officials to extend their working hours so that people can easily exchange notes and deposit old currency notes,” Verma said.
