Congress blames govt for vector-borne diseases

The Delhi Congress on Wednesday alleged that due to lack of preparation by the Delhi Government, viral fever like dengue, chikungunya and malaria have assumed an epidemic proportion.

Delhi Congress spokesperson Sharmishtha Mukherjee said that AAP government seems to have learnt no lesson from last year’s experience when 16,000 dengue cases were reported.

"Due to the inaction by the Delhi government, the Municipal Corporation and AAP, who indulge in blamegame, the people of Delhi were suffering," said Mukherjee.

She said the main reason for the spread of vectorborne diseases was the lack of preparedness and preventive measures by the AAP government to tackle the monsoon woes with properly coordinated plans well before rains hit the Capital.

"AAP government could not co-ordinate with all the concerned agencies as it has been in conflict with the MCDs, the central government and the bureaucrats, leaving little time to tackle urgent issues like desilting and preventing vector-borne diseases," said Mukherjee.

She also added that the inefficiency of the Delhi government could be gauged from the fact that on 28 July, 2016 the Director General of Health Services (DGHS) in an advisory note had stated that "It has come to the notice of this directorate from the print and electronic media that there is an upsurge of fever cases in Delhi".

Mukherjee said it was strange that according to Government statistics, the total number of chikungunya cases in Delhi till 3 September, 2016 were 560, which is not the correct figure, as there were more cases.
