DU: Ad hoc teachers want regularisation of services

Delhi University (DU) ad hoc teachers have submitted a memorandum to the President of India, appealing him to regularise their services. The teachers have been working for several years in various colleges and departments of the university.

The copies of memorandum were also handed over to the PMO, HRD Ministry, UGC and vice-chancellor of the university. The appeal was signed by more than 2,000 ad hoc and temporary teachers, apprising the President of their ‘discriminatory’ and ‘exploitative’ service conditions.

“It is known that nearly 4,500 teachers in the university departments and colleges are working on ad hoc basis, which is around half of the total faculty positions in the university. As per the UGC and the DU&’s guidelines, ad hoc appointments should be made for a short period of not more than four months and proportion of these faculties should not be more than 10 percent, but the university has developed a culture of appointing ad hoc faculties even against the permanent sanctioned posts for years,” read the press release.

Hundreds of ad hoc teachers belong to socially weaker sections, including SCs and STs community.

“Most ad hoc teachers have been working for 5 to 10 years and in few cases for more than 20 years. Around 50% of these teachers come from socially weaker sections,” said a woman teacher of Shyam Lal College.
