DU law students on hunger strike

Students of law at Delhi University have been on a hunger strike for the last two days against the Bar Council of India (BCI) recommendation to shut down colleges offering law courses in evening shift, saying such programmes do not ensure proper quality of legal education.

Several students have government jobs and are simultaneously pursuing their law course. They are very upset by the recommendation of the BCI to scrap evening classes which may result in a reduction of over 800 seats.

“I gave DU LLB entrance in June 2016, after DU released its prospectus for three colleges, one of which runs evening classes. I am a working professional so I took two weeks leave from office, prepared for the exam and got a rank within 100. Almost two months after the exam the BCI is now forcing DU to shut down evening classes and we have nowhere to go, said a student. Just can’t understand what forced DU to reduce seats and scrap evening classes that too after entrance test and publishing counseling dates shattering the last hope for us working professionals to gain quality legal education. Worthy students are suffering due to unnecessary tussle between BCI and DU. Hope everything falls in place and our problem is resolved as soon as possible,” said Hitesh Mahendru, a law student.

“We are requesting BCI to resolve the issue taking into consideration the interests of students. They have agreed to one or two points but the main point regarding number of seats remains unresolved. The tussle is for the seats only which is the main bone of contention,” said Dean of Law Faculty Prof S C Raina.
