Health crisis: MCD claims vs ground reality

Even as the three BJP-ruled municipal corporations and Delhi government have claimed that they have adopted holistic measures to weed out vector-borne diseases, the ground reality is sharply different.

A resident of Chilla village, an area falling in Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia’s constituency and under the jurisdiction of East Corporation said, "There is no fogging and pesticide spray in this area despite constant reaching out to area councillor Nikka Singh. Many people here are suffering from malaria, dengue and Chikungunya here."

Vegetable-seller Deepak Gupta from Trilokpuri said there was no fogging done in his area. His mother is now in hospital suffering from Chikungunya. In North Delhi around 20 lakh people residing in cluster areas near Sarai Rohilla Railway station are deprived of basic services, as civic bodies are yet to run the mosquito terminator which is used to check breeding in water bodies along the tracks and ensure the safety of rail passengers and people living along the tracks.

Apparently a short notice motion brought by the leader of Opposition Mukesh Goyal in the standing committee meeting of the North Corporation exposed the under-reporting of vector-borne diseases. Ironically, the Chairman of the Standing Committee, Pravesh Wahi, and his spouse are also suffering from Chikungunya.

Wahi, therefore, could not attend the meeting. Fatality count so far due to dengue has jumped up to 19, while 1300 dengue cases have been reported. The South Corporation has recorded 302 cases, the maximum among all the regions in the city. North Corporation and East Corporation have registered 134 and 86 cases respectively.

Central Zone of South Corporation has recorded 119 cases, the highest among its four zones. Najafgarh, West and and South Zones reported 84, 53 and 46 cases respectively. In the North Corporation the cases reported are Sadar Paharganj (11), Rohini (28) and Narela (6), Karol Bagh (16), City (33) and Civil Lines (40).

At least 15 fatalities due to chikungunya complications have been reported at various hospitals in the city, though South Corporation and Delhi government have not acknowledged these deaths yet. Among the three corporations, South Corporation has recorded 304 cases, followed by 244 in areas under the North Corporation and 80 under the East Corporation.

Altogether 1,283 cases have been recorded from areas falling outside the jurisdiction of the municipal corporations. Addresses were not available for 1,018 patients among these cases. Another 714 cases were recorded from other states, according to the report.
