In fever season, concern for the homeless

As Delhi reels under monsoon mayhem with cases of chikungunya on the rise, homeless people in the Capital who sleep on the street or in shelter homes are extremely vulnerable. Keeping this in mind, the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board has written to the Directorate of Health Services seeking medical asistance for the homeless.

A copy of the letter has been sent to secretary, health and family welfare, government of NCT of Delhi. The letter, a copy of which is with The Statesman, said DUSIB is running 197 shelters for homeless in Delhi with the help of NGOs. DUSIB said it has issued instructions to all the NGOs to maintain cleanliness in the shelters, keep the premises, toilets and bathing area clean and dry, to avoid stagnation of water and take all other preventive measures so as to prevent breeding of mosquitoes and spreading of diseases like Chikungunya, dengue and malaria.

"Department of Health, GNCTD has been deputing team of doctors to visit all the shelters and provide medical help and medicines. “Since the viral diseases are spreading in each part of Delhi, it is requested that the same practice may be continued and mobile team of doctors and supporting staff may again be constituted to visit these shelters everyday so that the homeless people suffering from these and other diseases may be attended to in the shelter itself," said the letter written by Pankaj Asthana of DUSIB.
