Farmers of Odisha and Chhattisgarh stage protest

While the ruling BJD flexed its muscle in an out and out
political show at Cuttack on Monday with its “Mahasangram”for Mahanadi waters, a
more significant “ Sankalpa Samavesh” by farmers of both Chhattisgarh and
Odisha was held at Jamadarpali on the banks of the Hirakud reservoir on Monday to
warn both the governments in Chhattisgarh and Odisha against promoting
industrial use of Hirakud waters.

“Hirakud water is meant for farmers and other dependants
like fishermen, agricultural labourers etc.At no cost, will we let the
government of the both the states to deprive farmers of their basic rights,”
warned the farmers at a massive gathering.

Virtually exposing the BJP government in Chhattisgarh and
the BJD government in Odisha for their political stunts over the Mahanadi water
issue, the farmers of both states pointed out that a decade ago they had staged
a protest and had symbolically drawn a “Laxman Rekha”close to the pipeline that
was being laid for the Vedanta company to draw Hirakud waters. A good numbers
of farmers from Chhattisgarh state were also present in on Monday’s “Sankalpa
Samavesh” who also alleged that the government in their state is constructing
barrages and dams for industrial use of water and not for irrigating their
land.

“Both governments are busy in serving the industrialists in
the name of farmers,” alleged Bishnu Sevak Gupta, a farmers’ leader from
Chhattisgarh and a senior leader of the Raigarh jilla bachao sangharsh samity.
The farmer leaders of Odisha also spoke on similar lines.“Odisha government is
making innumerable numbers of agreements with industries to allot water to them
from Hirakud reservoir.
