Army chief Suhag arrives in Srinagar

Indian Army chief General Dalbir Singh landed in Srinagar on Sunday to take stock of the army camp in Uri where militants martyred 17 soldiers early in the morning.

Gen Singh will assess the army installations and camps near the Pakistan border in Jammu and Kashmir and the alertness of the soldiers along the Line of Control (LoC).

Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar too will be reaching the site soon and the announcement was made after Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh chaired an emergency meet at his residence.

The attack took place at around 5.30 am as the fidayeen (suicide) militants stormed the Army base in Jammu and Kashmir’s Uri Town and started firing indiscriminately. Four terrorists were gunned down.

Six soldiers were injured who were airlifted from the border town to the Army’s base hospital in Srinagar city.

The brigade headquarters is situated in Uri town of north Kashmir Baramulla district close to the Line of Control.
