Cyclone Vardah hits Chennai, Nellore; 2 killed

Two people have been killed as strong cyclone hits north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coast, close to Chennai, on Monday afternoon.
Over 4,600 people were shifted to relief camps in four districts Chennai, Kanchipuram, Thiruvallur and Villupuram as Cyclone Vardah makes a landfall north of Chennai, according to official sources.
Chennai has come to a halt with all suburban rail services completely suspended and runways shut.
All operations at Chennai Airport have been suspended till 8 pm on Monday.
Special precautions have been taken at Kalpakkam power plant situated in the Coromandel coast of 70 km from south of Chennai in Tamil Nadu. Schools and colleges at Kalpakkam have been closed.
Heavy rainfall and gusty wind lashed Chennai, Kanchipuram and Thiruvallur districts of Tamil Nadu and Nellore districts of Andhra Pradesh since Sunday night.
Trees have been uprooted in many areas as wind speed crosses 150km/hr, the weather department said.
Glasses in the window panes of Chennai’s IMD department have been broken due to gusty wind.
Meanwhile, rescue and emergency operations are on high alert.
Fifteen NDRF teams have been deployed.
Navy services – two ships with doctors, food and water for 5,000 people are ready to be deployed at Vizag and Arakkonam to provide assistance.
The Indian Air Force too is on high alert.
