Demonetisation move politically motivated: Mayawati

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Saturday slammed the Narendra Modi government over the poor implementation of demonetising Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes and said the step was “politically motivated for political gains”.
“The demonetisation decision taken by the central government was politically motivated and for political gains,” Mayawati told reporters here.
“Without planning, demonetisation has created a kind of financial emergency situation in the country,” the former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister said.
She also said demonetisation would not help the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the upcoming Uttar Pradesh assembly elections. “…Instead of gaining anything, they are set to loose,” the BSP supremo said.
On November 8, the government announced scrapping of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes to curb “black money and corruption”.
Serpentine queues were witnessed outside banks and ATMs after the announcement of the demonetisation, as many anxious people waited for hours to deposit or exchange their spiked currency notes or obtain cash.
