India, Bahrain join forces to thwart human trafficking

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) to be signed between India and Bahrain to prevent human trafficking especially that of women and children was on Thursday approved by the Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The agreement is likely to be signed during the Home Ministers upcoming visit to Bahrain in April.

The MoU will focus on thwarting human trafficking along with rescue, recovery, repatriation and re-integration of the victims and ensuring speedy investigation and prosecution of traffickers and organised crime syndicates in both the countries.

In addition, anti-trafficking cells and task force will work on both sides to prevent human trafficking while police and other concerned authorities will work in close cooperation and exchange information.

Furthermore, the repatriation of victims would be done as expeditiously and the home country will undertake the safe and effective re-integration of the victims. A joint task force with representatives from both sides will be constituted to monitor the working of the MoU.

India is a source and transit country as far as trafficking to Bahrain is concerned while Bahrain is a destination country for men and women subjected to trafficking in persons, specifically forced labour and forced prostitution, the government said.

India has signed one MoU to prevent trafficking with Bangladesh.
