No stay against suspension of DMK lawmakers

The Madras High Court on Monday issued notice to the Tamil Nadu assembly Speaker P Dhanapal against the suspension of DMK legislators for a week but declined to stay the ruling.

Dhanpal had suspended the DMK legislators for creating bedlam in the House on Aug 17.

Leader of House and Finance Minister O Panneerselvam had moved a resolution for suspending the DMK legislators and it was adopted by the House.

The DMK has 89 members, including party chief and former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, who did not attend the session on Aug 17.

On Aug 19, the suspended DMK legislators held a mock assembly session outside the Tamil Nadu secretariat building, even as the state legislature was in session, to protest against the suspension.

Following this, the police filed a case against the DMK law makers.
