Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said Muslims in the country should be uplifted instead of being seen as vote banks.
Addressing the party cadre in Kozhikode at Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya’s centenary celebration that also marked the end of the three-day National Council of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Modi said Muslims should neither be rewarded nor be rebuked.
“Deendayal Upadhyaya ji said, Muslims shouldn’t be treated as substance for votes or looked down upon,they should be considered equal. Don’t reward Muslims, don’t rebuke Muslims, empower them. Think of them as your own,” said Modi invoking Upadhyaya&’s teachings.

Highlighting that Upadhyaya was appointed Chairman of Jana Sangh in Kozhikode which later evolved into the Bhartiya Jana Sangh and then to the BJP, Modi said the party has never compromised on its ideology and entered politics not for gains but to serve the people.
Modi further said that the standards of politics have fallen a lot after independence and is creating immense danger for democracy. However, all hope was not lost and the ideals are still alive.
Upadhyaya, a politician, philosopher, economist, sociologist, historian, journalist was born on September 25, 1916 in Uttar Pradesh. He served as the Bharatiya Jana Sangh from 1967 until his death in 1968.
