Uri attack: Sumtra calls for efforts to combat terrorism

Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, who is leading an Indian Parliamentary delegation to New Zealand, on Sunday stressed on the need for global efforts to to tackle terrorism as she condoled the loss of lives in a terror attack on an army base at Uri in Kashmir.

"I am extremely pained to learn that a number of precious lives of our soldiers were lost in this cowardly attack. It is high time that terrorism, in all its forms and manifestations, is condemned by the international community and joint global efforts are made to wipe out this menace.

"Each one of us should come together against terror and promote the concept of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam," she said.

Heavily armed militants suspected to be from Pakistan-based JeM stormed an army base in Uri in Kashmir killing 17 jawans early today.

Mahajan also conveyed her sympathies to those who have been injured in an explosion in Manhattan, USA last night. She prayed for their speedy recovery.

She was speaking during a programme hosted by the Indian community in Auckland.
