46 families evacuated in Mizoram

With one more family being rescued on Friday morning, at least 46 families have been evacuated from waterlogged areas in Hunthar locality of Aizawl, state Disaster Management and Rehabilitation officials said.

The officials, quoting geologists, said heavy rain that lashed Aizawl Thursday resulted in the area being marooned.

A local Baptist Church was also vacated on the advice of the District Disaster Management Authority officials.

The area had been sinking for years, but the soil movement has intensified this year, the officials said, adding that it affected the Aizawl-Lengpui Airport road, which is also part of the National Highway 54, which links the state with the rest of the country.

Meanwhile, two senior geologists from the Geological Survey of India in Shillong began on the spot study of the sinking area from Wednesday seeking to find permanent solution.
